Hi all, well I'm new to chickens and have not much knowledge and am hoping for some advice. Last week we lost 5 hens to either wandering or a predator. We were in town late and didn't get back until 10 or 11 and when we went to close their coop most were gone. So last night a friend told us she knew someone whose neighbor was complaining about his chickens and he was selling them $1 a hen to try to reduce the flock quickly. So we went and picked up a handful. They are actually pretty magnificent looking in my newbie eyes. Perky, stout and with incredible feathers. They were all free range and I don't believe they were giving oyster shells or grit or anything. They also seemed to be laying in random spots, the little girls showed me the eggs that some hen laid in their flowerbed.
I guess to make an even longer story short, one of the pretty hens laid an 'egg' while we were still near the coop finishing things up, shortly after we arrived home. The thing is, the shell was broken into two pieces. Looking at it, it appears about 90% of the shell was on the ground and the entire yolk/white was on the ground and then other hens were happily snacking on it. That was at about 11pm last night, this morning she is still perky and eating. Should I be worried about her being egg bound in the future? Should I be watching for anything specific? Is there anything I should give her/them in addition to the normal stuff we have for the others, pellets, oyster shell and grit? Any other advice?
I just want to be sure the chickens are ok.
