I am new to chicken and will pick up my babies on Thursday. They have 5 different breed to choose from. Barred rock, silver laced Wyandotte, speckled Sussex, cucu Marans and Easter eggers.
I was thinking 2 barred 1 Sussex and 1 EE. I can only have 4 in my city. Do you think this combo will work?

If by "work" you mean that they will get along well together, then yes.
Are you going for a more diverse and colorful egg basket, a rainbow flock, or something else?
If you want different colored eggs I would choose 1 EE, 1 Cuckoo Marans, 1 Barred Rock and 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte.
If you want a rainbow flock of different colored birds I would choose 1 EE, 1 Barred Rock or 1 Cuckoo Marans, 1 Speckled Sussex, and 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte.

What's great about the list you are choosing from is that they are all breeds that should get along without a problem! I think whatever combo you choose will work out just fine. Also trust your gut if you are going to pick them up in person. Sometimes you see one that's an obvious bully or one that's clearly docile. You might change your mind once you seem them ;)

I would get 4 different breeds, then you can easily tell each apart with a glance.. and the eggs will be different, so you'll learn to instantly recognize who is laying and who is not.
Out of those 5, I'd skip the Wyandotte. Only because I had one and she was standoffish while the others were friendly.
My Speckled Sussex is my best layer, even at 2 yrs.

Thank for all the responses. With working I mainly was thinking if they will get along or will one be bullied or known to be a bully. Good average egg production and being docile is also important as I will have kids helping me with the flock.
