I’ve noticed my chickens picking through the scratch grain and leaving only the cracked corn.... but they eat all of the rest of it.

It’s not a huge issue, I don’t give them that much scratch, but I was curious if others have noticed this?

Well normally I just throw it on top of the litter in the covered run... the litter is not super deep... but I was noticing that I’d see specks of corn here and there later...

But the other day we ran low on crumbles, and weather kept me from getting to town ... so i gave them extra scratch in a feeder bowl to hold them over... and I noticed they were definitely picking around the corn.

My orpingtons will not eat corn and will peck around it too. I noticed this when they were young and to test it out I threw a handful of corn and they ran up to it, took a close look, and walked away.

Ok now we’re getting somewhere... either you and I have weirdos or you and I have normal picky peckers... :idunno

Or maybe we’re not getting anywhere yet.... maybe I should have made this thread include a pole.

Yeah, my 35 months old Golden Comets leave the cracked corn for the songbirds. They won't touch it. They have plenty of other goodies in my custom Scratch. 20190212_121137.jpg . GC

I throw a handful of scratch to my 5 BRs every day. The cracked corn is the last thing they eat if they eat it. Sometimes they'll come back to it later and eat it, but it's never the first thing. My scratch has BOSS in it-----that's always the first thing scarfed up.

It's the milo in the scratch that mine don't like. The wild birds usually clean up after the chickens. In ice/snow situations, the wild birds need some help so I put it out for them too, and scratch is cheaper than bird seed.
