I have a Serama hen that just raised 5 babies and when I moved them to their new coop,I noticed she was having trouble pooping and then saw this. I've been giving her warm Epsom salt baths but no relief. She will poop a little after that and feel a little better, but I've never seen this before and don't know how to treat. It looks like her vent is scabbed and dying. Please any help will be appreciated

Oh dear. I'm not 100% sure based on the picture, but are you seeing what looks like chunks of yolk coming out? I'm wondering whether she might have a lash egg stuck and impeding everything. If you've got gloves and a lubricant, you could try (gently!!) seeing if you can fish out any of the material. When a lash egg (a nice way of saying pus-yolk-stink-mass) gets stuck, it also blocks her ability to relieve herself which might be why the skin around her vent is in distress. I would love to be wrong and I hope I am wrong, because a lash egg is never good news.

If you have Vetricyn and some variety of antibiotic cream to apply topically afterwards, that's what I would do for the external portion.

Thank you for your reply! Its not an egg, because this happened to one of my roosters as well. I lost him before I could get any help. It looks like the outer part of her vent is scabbing and that's the best way I can describe it. It's making her constipated.

A lash egg is not an egg, it's a mass of infectious material, ie: pus. It's caused by salpingitis. Some masses are small and can be passed, some are large, or long and tubular shaped and can fill and block the oviduct. It can sometimes cause a prolapse if the chicken is trying to expel it, and it can block her from being able to expel droppings.
I can't tell if that's what's going on or not, but something to consider.

I would give her only water soluble foods, her regular feed mixed with water to make a mash, make sure she's getting plenty of fluids, and give her some coconut oil to help lubricate things in case it's constipation. A couple of teaspoons of coconut oil, you can freeze it til firm and break it into peices and she will probably eat it, they usually like it. Or you can put bits in her beak and she will swallow it. Do that a couple times a day, and see if it helps. You can also repeat the soaks and oil around the vent, and inside the edge as much as you can to see if it helps soften it and lets her pass whatever it is.

Thank you so much for your help and I' going to see if this works. I know it's not from an egg, because I've had another hen and a rooster with this same problem. The only thing I can think of that has changed is the scratch feed I changed. It is so dusty and dry even when I put condition oils in it. I know I will go back to the other I used. They don't get a lot of scratch, because I give them more sprouts I grow myself as treats than the garbage you get from feed stores. Thank you again!
