I love this setup for a brooder, I would be concerned with preditors like snakes and rats though. I also agree that a smaller more confined area at first might work better. Perhaps build a solid box with lid where the heat lamp is over the top of it. I too am a california girl and my babies still have a heat lamp at five weeks at night.

What kind are you getting?
We are getting BO, Australorps, and Barred Rocks with a total of 10

I am starting out small and will see how we all fare with the newcomers!
They are not due to arrive until July 1st. D/H is hard at work on the new coop. We have based it on one of the designs from Woodenart. We'll post pics under Coops when we are finished

Also, I was certain I had read about not putting chicks on cedar as it is toxic to them. I will just have to get them bagged pine shavings, spoiled little things
