PICS!!!New coop done!!!!! chicks coming from ideal tomorrow!!

Great set up for the new arrivals! I am wondering what type of bedding you are using? As we have horses, it looks like the cedar bedding we sometimes get for our stalls. Now if this is cedar you are using, is it safe for baby chicks? I ask, as we will be getting our babies soon and was thinking I need to hunt up some pine shavings, which are hard to find around here! Thanks for any insight:)

Nice job!

Do not use cedar shavings. Pine only.

I love this setup for a brooder, I would be concerned with preditors like snakes and rats though. I also agree that a smaller more confined area at first might work better. Perhaps build a solid box with lid where the heat lamp is over the top of it. I too am a california girl and my babies still have a heat lamp at five weeks at night.

Regardless what you do, enjoy and best of luck to you and the chicks.

What kind are you getting?

We are getting BO, Australorps, and Barred Rocks with a total of 10:) I am starting out small and will see how we all fare with the newcomers!
They are not due to arrive until July 1st. D/H is hard at work on the new coop. We have based it on one of the designs from Woodenart. We'll post pics under Coops when we are finished:) Also, I was certain I had read about not putting chicks on cedar as it is toxic to them. I will just have to get them bagged pine shavings, spoiled little things:))

In the first picture it appears to have a gap in the corner where the sunlilght is coming through....it looks a little big. I think the chicks will be able to get out or predators get in? I would run hardwire cloth in the corners to make sure and on the bottom outside area on the walled sides.

It looks great and roomy for them. They will love it.
