So my chicks are 3 weeks old and almost ready for the coop. I think I'm going to miss their soft peeps in the morning, waking me up. Here's their 3 week pics:
Athena, who hates being held or touched and is still the most vocal of the bunch:
Becky, who is the heaviest and runs to my hand even though I've never hand fed her. She doesn't like to be picked up but will sit contentedly in my lap:
Henny Penny, who is nervous about everything. I've been taking them for field trips outside and even a blade of grass waving in the wind makes her squawk and try to jam herself under the other chickens. Poor Henny Penny is so afraid of me:
Peaches has grown into the largest of the hens. She tolerates being held, runs to me when she sees me, and likes sitting on top of the brooder box:
Lucy, who is my smallest hen, and most likely low hen on the totem pole is still sweet and curious. She is always the first to check out anything new. I added a larger roost and she was the first on it even though now, they push her off. She's the first to run to me when she sees me and hops into my hand if offered:
They all like taking dust baths. Becky is especially funny because she will start on her belly and end up on her side with her legs sticking straight out. The first time she did that, I thought she had keeled over and died! As a new chicken keeper, it's been pretty rewarding so far.
I'm behind in posting pics so I'll be sharing 4th AND 5th week pics!
Week 4
Athena had a slight red rose comb coming in and I can see the wattles starting. She's flighty literally and figuratively and doesn't like being picked up.
Becky is still the largest. She's never in a hurry to do anything, whether grabbing food from my hand or investigating something new.
Henny Penny lives up to her name. The sky is definitely falling, multiple times during the day. She's always the last to come get food from me and after she snatches what she wants, she takes off running.
Peaches is the larger of my Buffs. Her and Lucy come running when they see me. She's been getting more aggressive with the other chicks.
Sweet Lucy loves me. She lets me pick her up, comes running when she sees me, and pipes out quite the song when I leave.
It's amazing how fast they grow. It's literally overnight sometimes. They've been taking field trips to the outside and spend time in the mini coop. I think they're happier out there than the brooder box. They've definitely outgrown that space. I'll be putting them in the coop permanently tomorrow. I dont know if I'm going to sleep at all!
Athena continues to grow a redder comb and wattles. Her feathers are pretty dark but because she's a hatchery chick, I'm not expecting her to have much silver tipping. She's a somewhat wary chicken and is so difficult to get out of the tiny coop and run. I'm thankful I am going to have something larger soon.
Becky continues to lose all her lovely grey baby feathers and soft cream feathers are taking their place. Her cheeks are so cute. She's a little shy but doesn't mind sitting on my arm or leg. She does prefer to be within sight of her flock though.
Henny Penny is a hoot. If I give them food she runs away but rushes right back when she sees everyone else eating. Shell shove her way under everyone's leg and jam herself in to get her fair share. She's shy but I love her personality. She makes me laugh!
Peaches wouldn't let me take pictures. I'm going to try again tomorrow. She has become a little cranky. I think the brooder is too close quarters for her. She still runs to me but as soon as she's out of the box she's zooming around the laundry room.
Lucy has taken to cuddling in close to me when I pick her up. She prefers to be tucked under my arm and trills away when I set her there. She's a little too possessive though. She nipped my daughter when she got too close to me so I instantly put her back in the brooder and left. My daughter is a young adult so it wasn't traumatic but we were both shocked at her behavior. Lucy's wattles are starting to show a little pink but her comb is still flesh colored. I wonder if that means any thing?
