PLEASE..I need coop ideas..the DH and I are looking for ideas and designs..I have 3 adult ladies and five 8 week old chicks...we have 5 acres and have a section that is going to be located in...I want something that has small storage for feed.shavings and hay. Here is a picture of out coop right now...we will try to build on to that one..but again not sure! Any coop picts and ideas would be very helpful and help the DH see some ideas...also because I think he does not believe on the chicken math theory and does not want to overbuild it...

The person I got the coop from had 12 hens in there..I don't think it is big enough for 12 hens...they have 2 roost on top and I put in 2 nesting boxes..I am planning on having 3 more laying hens..with 2 roos....

At the top of this page, right in the middle, there's a link to the Coop Designs page. There must be hundreds of coop pictures there. Try browsing through these pages and I bet you'll find inspiration.

My hubby is so not into the whole chicken thing but once he started looking at all the different coop designs, well thats how you drag a Navy builder into the chicken thang! Good luck!

I built an exact replica coop (with my small changes, of course) of a coop there. Now we're taking on a new construction and getting lots of great ideas.

Good luck.

This is my coop that we built for our girls. The coop portion is 6X6 and the run is 6X10
I have storage underneath and the girls up above whic is great for your back! No bending and no walking in poo!
I currently have two small Bantam mixes, one EE mix, and two Light Brahma Bantams in there and may add a couple of chicks under my broody in a week or so. That would put me to seven which I have had in there before and they were quite comfy. Probably doesn't work for your numbers but the layout with the storage and living space is great. I am now converting a grain shed to have the same exact layout for my my group of Porcelain and Quail d'Anvers. Wouldn't change a thing

These are the two doors on the back. The top is for cleaning the coop, bottom is storage

Looking in from the run the roost is to the right

Looking in from the run the nests are on the left

I built my coop using the Building Chicken Coops for Dummies book.

It is the 8X8 walk in coop. It would definitely be big enough for your chickens and you could use some of the room for storage.
As far as chicken math goes, I started with four 8 week old chicks last year. I had never owned chickens before. We built a chicken tractor that was just the right size for the four we had. Then I bought five more pullets and a rooster. Of course the tractor wasn't going to be big enough for all of them so I bought a coop that was supposed to be big enough for 12 chickens but it wasn't so I built the big coop. In January this year, I hatched out (yeah chicken math is starting to really roll now) five more chicks. Four of those are boys, so I am only up one more pullet. Just hatched out 11 more chicks. I don't know what sex they are yet but I am sure that I got more than one pullet. I am eyeballing my big coop, thinking it is not big enough!

BTW - the book is GREAT, especially if you don't have a lot of building experience!

Tell hubby to "Go big or go home!" Plan on more hens then what you want. I built a playhouse coop 8'x8' footprint with the hen house being 8'x3.5', like the one pictured above by nottinghamchicks. We house 8 hens in there now, bought 15 chicks in Feb. from the feed store to increase our flock. I am now building another coop that is 8'x8' walk in for the new girls, we will have the two coops. Always, always plan on getting more! Simple chicken math! lol Your coop was way too small for 12 hens. Good luck, you can check out our existing coop on our BYC page.

That is what I thought when I heard they had 12 hens in there..I felt bad having 3 hens in there..could not picture what it was like with 12 in there! I know that I want at least 10 hens with 2 roos...but I have fallen in love with the cochin breed and may want more...lol! Chicken math..gotta love it!
