One of the button quail was a girl & I have one almost certain female coturnix so far (out of 14 total so far...still five more of unknown gender...)

2 girls out of about 20 babies...

ROFL well, there ARE a few (5-6) still that are of undetermined gender. We'll hope that the squirrel finds a few more nuts soon...

Boots can even turn out to be a Roo and I won't mind. Of course, I'd prefer that Boots is a hen.

However, I'm just so happy that SHE ended up being healthy that I will be happy either way.

My birds love the fake foliage too. I have clumps of it attached in various spots to the side of the kennel. They lay under it all the time.

What beautiful birds you have. Sorry to hear about your overflow of roos. I still don't know what I have. Mine are a day behind yours. I also have all whites so until they crow I wont know. It would be nice if all three were girls.

Thank you!

Well, the white that is crowing is by far the smallest of the three. In fact, he was the runt of the whole bunch. He steadily developed about 3-5 days behind the rest. He was still a half feathered little runt when they were fully feathered. He took a swipe at a passing bird that morning before I saw him crow...but I haven't seen that repeat. I'm watching him for bad boy behavior, though. (I'm hoping the other two whites turn out to be girls. That would let me have some to breed, at least.)

Weigh them, girls weigh more. I am practicing to pick females by lifting them to differentiate the weights when buying young birds not of the feather sexing type.
I close my eyes or reach into a darkened pen and pick them up then look to see on the Browns if its a boy or a girl. I can't tell how much they weigh, but I can tell if its a M/F. Now I have to practice at even younger ages.

Also the girls stay lower to the ground. THey are less likely to stand tall as if to tell it all. But some so. Their belly is more rounded, an overall more rounded appearance. Try it.
