I'm in northern Ontario where the winters are brutal; -20 to -40 Celsius with 3-4 feet of snow. I want to get into egg layers soon.

I normally don't do much to winterize my coops. Other than making sure there is no wind blowing on them I don't do anything. Make sure they still have ventilation though. I live in Pennsylvania.

Brrr. Your post makes me cold. I don’t have any pictures, but here in central Alabama my main winterizing involves wrapping my run in 6mil plastic to block the wind. My coop is insulated with plenty of ventilation, but no drafts. My flock does free range and when they’re out they usually wind up on my deck, out of the wind and spread eagle in the sun. We usually have no more than three to four weeks worth of below freezing temps, but we can have some wicked wind chills. That’s what I have to guard against. I also discontinue the automatic waterer and plug in the heated ones. I haven’t wrapped the run yet. We’re just now dipping into the 50’s at night. Generally I will begin winterizing in November.

Three winterizing steps:
1. Stock tank heater in the water. It stays outside all winter.
2. Plastic sheeting on all but the wall facing the house. Top 6 inches left open for ventilation. Additionally windows remain open.
3. Roof rake. The run roof is flat. So the roof rake is essential.

Winter. The upper foot, and the end, is left open.

Close lower windows.
Add heater to waterer.
Close upper windows.
Toss cardboard on mesh ceiling over roost to block drafts/blowing snow from eave vents.
Snow shovel out for parts of mesh roofed run(both ground and roof).

Here are a few pics of my coops all cozy and warm for winter. I have 5 currently, everyone is ready for ol' man winter.

White mountains N.H. night time lows for a bit down to-30°F add wind, -50°F.
Snowfall 100"+ per year
6mil plastic around run keeps the wind out. Smoky polycarbonate roof over the run and a ventilated & insulated coop. I am planning on more upper ventilation.
