Pigeon chicks getting sick and dies, help help

Does anyone know what causes pigeon chicks to not be able to process feed from their parents. I have had this happen a couple of times, where you can feel the feed in its craw and it feels harden and not soft and loose and eventually the chick will die. Is this common and what causes this and how can I treat it.
