Woke up this morning only to find that my 7 day old baby pigeon dead in it's nest box but with only his head missing You could even see where it had been taken off, exposing a crop full of seed. A lot of seed, so therefore I'm thinking that whatever it was must of gotten interrupted before he could finish off the job. Would like to know what type of predator would take just the head. I know that raccoon, owls and possum will sometimes do that, but our coop is too secure to allow any of those size animals in. So I'm wondering if it could have been a medium to small sized rat. We've seen a few around lately and there was a family of them living under the spa that we just tore out. We killed all the babies and some of the adults, but I did see a few get away. Could these fellow possibly be the culprit I'm gonna start to stalk? Thanks all.

I agree. We had baby quail and were losing babies left and right even in the house. We found out it was a rat because he chewed a fat hole in the wall and we caught him taking a baby through.
Only solutions I can think of would be a dog that likes to hunt (our Akita exterminated rats quickly) or poison if you're afraid of the dog getting ahold of your birds.

Sticky glue traps work well and are not toxic like poison can be, the bait on it is poison so the animal dies on location instead of being ingested by another animal or rotting somewhere you cant get to.

Also, there are snap traps that require the rat to turn and get the bait up inside on the roof, he has to have his head inside. so he has to step on the trigger to get to the treat. Works wonders and kills easy and easy to clean.

Thanks for all your help. I've always been afraid to use sticky traps before because I didn't want to see the rat just stuck on it alive and then have to figure out how to finish the thing off myself. Didn't know that they had poison on or in them already. Good to know!!! I'm off to Home Depot right now. Those smart suckers remember where I nailed the trap to the fence board and just jump right over it from then on. I've seen them do it! Thanks again and I'll let you know how it well it works or not.

I shoot them with a pellet gun or blow gun just wait until he comes out of the hole you can also use homemade drowner traps you take a bucket with a dowel though it put a can through the dowel and peanut butter on the can and when he walks on the can it spins and he falls in the bucket in drowns. i once had 4 mice in a bucket and it works really well.
