I have been reading alot about pigeons lately. I even found pigeon talk...

(thanks BYC for organization!)

So, they mate for life, have 2 eggs, and if they have 2 boys or 2 girls will kill off one of them? What other "human" behaviors (ya, some times I think I am going to cull the flock for the stronger "breeders" once in a while... gotta love teens

) do pigeons possess???

WE have one cock bird, who(while his mate is setting the nest) will sneak off and woo other hens in the loft.

Every time he does this, my hen kills the nest!

WOW!

I haven't had that with my pigeons... Mine are pretty monogamous, they don't flirt with any single birds...But then I try to only keep pairs. And they have never harmed their babies (of any age) at all so far...nor those from other nests. They are viciously protective of their nests tho and will not allow any other bird near it.

Could the breed of pigeon affect how they act? I have Lahores.

Take Care,
Bill.

Pigeon do not kill off young usually. Scalping (adults killing young pigeons) can occur if a baby wonders out of it nest or into another nest, or if an adult flies into the wrong nest and thinks she has unwelcomed visitors. Pigeons mate for life unless they change their mind lol. Different breeds do behave differently. I have thief pouters, they have one night stand often and may steal each others mates at random(mostly the younger birds).

We suspect it's a fertility issue. The pair will lay, but no eggs hatch, and yes, most develope a little embryo,(spelling) same thing with our doves, so we split the pairs, and forced them to breed with others, and now we have babies. So there's most likely more than the birds are telling us.
