babyblue wrote: you are seriously misguiding what is graphic if you believe a animal with its throat slit and bloody is not graphic. so by your own theory a human with a bloody slit throat is not graphic right? because we are just animals too. how about porn too? because someday all our kids are going to be sexually mature adults, why not pop in a video and show them just how babies are made. NO, we don't do that because there is an appropriate time and place for them to learn these things. if I decide my 3yo does not need to know these things just yet thats ok and does not mean my child lives in lala land or that I am somehow a bad parent

Your so screwed up in your thinking. I'm not sure about your family but my family doesn't eat humans so thats a off the wall comment. And porn is not relavent either because at this age they aren't having sex. But they are eating animals so yes they should be able to handle how they get to the table. Your so well odd.

I'll "save you the witty response" but will address this for anyone who is wondering. The pig's throat is generally slit after death. Not during or before. A well-placed shot, in the center of an X between ears and eyes, drops the pig and then it's neck is slit, hung and drained. In fast-paced commercial slaughter it's not unheard of to have a hog slip through the cracks and be slit while still alive, but I don't know anyone (though I'm sure sickos exist) that would hang and slit a live hog and slitting a live hog on the ground would be quite a chore. They may be short and round but they're incredibly strong even when they're little. I can see where that does look like it would have been painful, if you didn't know the hog was shot first.

Thanks for the info.. I truly hope the pig was shot first.. ugh..
I cant imagine hanging my pigs up and them screaming and struggling.. ..and then slitting their throats while still alive... it makes me ill to think about it..
To me..it looks the throat was hacked at with an ax...
I'm sure i'm wrong though...

Oh, no! I mean, I guess they could have used an ex, but I highly doubt it.

A nice sharp knife does the job just fine. Pigs have thick necks and carry fat in their jowls, their arteries actually run rather deep, almost near their spine. You cut deep to make sure of a good drain.

Then if you misguided your child about a mounted head then I'm not sure what your problem is. You could have just lied to your child and said it the pig picture was fake or a Halloween decoration. Ooh I forgot the blood makes your 3 year old kid realize it's real. Hope you don't take him out on Halloween that fake blood just might just cause shock.

Eeek! I don't know that I would day she's "screwed up". I think that her thinking is very common, rather normal, really. She's a mother, mothers want to protect their children. I want to protect my children, that's for sure. It's just a cultural perception, that kids need protecting from things we see as graphic. We don't always realize that what we have been conditioned to think of as graphic our children don't yet realize is supposed to be taboo and we just miss the learning opportunity -- not because we want to not teach but because we truly believe what we're doing, "protecting them" is best.

I don't think babyblue is a "bad mother" I think she thinks she's being the best mother in the world. I just wish it weren't so ingrained in our society that this is a threat that children need protecting from.

And for the record I never assumed (or ASSumed) that you wouldn't ever tell your children or show them about slaughter. I just think protecting them for an allotted amount of time and then later telling them is detrimental. Though I do understand why you think it is necessary. It's much more traumatic to introduce things to kids that are not part of their reality later than it is to raise them as if it is normal from the start.

My oldest is a very sensitive child, especially about animals. I do understand children that require a little extra help over the topic. The first time she reacted to what she was seeing as a dead animal she was about 18 months old. We were driving by a friend's house, saw him out front with a fresh buck in his truck and stopped. As we were standing there chatting he pulled it out of the box so he could get it hung and while talking he put his foot up on it. My daughter was LIVID. But I didn't berate our friend for having a deer there, or doing what he felt was normal. Instead I just quietly ducked out of the conversation, squatted down and helped her through what she was feeling and seeing. By the time we left she had touched the deer, asked all the questions she had and was feeling better. And then repeated exposure after that helped her to resolve the rest of the issues she would have. She is still to this day a very sensitive child and has amazing connection and compassion with animals. They can grow up with death and remain the great sensitive kids they started out. I actually think with the really sensitive kids slow exposure starting young helps them even more than the ones that aren't as sensitive -- I have one of those too, it's always just been a fascination for her.

Sorry but I feel you are screwed up if you compare butchering of animals to porn and human murder. It's her right to feel that way and it's my right to think she's crazy.
