This is my little male pilgrim gosling that I got from Metzers 2 weeks ago. My female died, I should have ordered 2 females but thats hindsight. I'm trying to find someone around here that raises pilgrims. I so want him to have a mate. If I can't find a pilgrim what other breed would you recommend as a mate for him.

A friend of mine here in south-central KY has pilgrims. I don't know if she's hatched any goslings yet this year but she usually has listings on golsn.com.

Hm... looks female to me?

Maybe it's the age. I don't know if beak color is different between the sexes.
Excuse my newbie-ness.

Good observation, I didn't even notice that. I would also say it's female. The males should be very light colored. My embden girl babies are darker with dark-ish bills when they hatch but they lighten up as they get older.

I know Pilgrims are one of the sex-linked breeds.
I'm almost positive that I read somewhere males are (almost) always born completely yellow and turn white.

I don't think they are necessarily completely yellow, though I'm sure they can be. But, like white sebastopols and embdens, the males are much lighter at hatch than the females. http://holderreadfarm.com/photogallery/pilgrim_page/pilgrim_geese_page.htm

I hope you are right and she is a female. I ordered a male and female and this one was the lighest color and the biggest and he/she was banded as a male. The one that died was way darker.

Also, Meyer Hatchery carries them though they are out of stock in the Pilgrims now... still they are super helpful so I suggest calling them to find out when they expect to have any. They very likely order them for you from an outside breeder, who then ships them directly to you. I know for a fact that's what they do with their Guineas, so I suspect it'll be the same with the geese.

Anyway, just a thought. http://www.meyerhatchery.com/produc...=Geese&grd_prodone_filter=PRODUCT_ID = 'PILS'
