Pine/Cedar

Reading that both pine and cedar shavings can be problematic due to toxic oil.

But it's okay to use either wood for coop construction, right?

I used some cedar and some cherry to build my coops...the cedar has caused no problems.

Pine is just fine to use - not toxic.

The oils in cedar can be toxic...but if the wood was good & dry before construciton, it's okay.

Be careful with treated lumber.. let it air out for a bit b4 you put your birds in there. So far this year I have used pee pads, and pine shavings in my brooders. No problems so far. oh and

Pine is fine. Never heard of it being toxic. Maybe to reptiles but not to chickens.

I had some problems earlier this year. I had a plastic brooder and between it and the pine shavings there was not enough air movement and it was irritating the little ones terrible. I since have improved ventilation and all seems well. I also switched to aspen shavings. good Luck with your little ones and welcome to BYC Jean

I have used pine many, many times--& use cedar shavings with my grown birds-- the kind you buy in the bags, both pine & cedar, are kiln dried-- subsequently, all the harmful (i.e. toxic) oils are gone!
