We previously had sand on top of crushed rock in our run, but it's been too hard to manage and too hard for us to top up. So I covered it with pine shavings. The plan is to just keep adding more pine shavings every so often, maybe some leaves when fall comes, etc.

Any other ideas?

I use course pine shavings (like for horse stalls) and have been very happy with it. In the coop I spot clean and change it out every few weeks, in the run just keep adding to it and plan is to clean it out a few times a year at most. :)

How big is your run, in feet by feet?
Dimensions and pics would help immensely here.

How many birds?
What is your climate?

Pine shavings are really too small.
My runs have semi-deep litter(cold composting), never clean anything out, just add smaller dry materials on occasion, add larger wood chippings as needed.
Aged ramial wood chippings are best IMO.
