I have only used shavings, but showing how much I know I used cedar one time. Got it out as soon as I figured out it can be lethal to chickens. I was worried about them getting an impacted crop or whatever you call it with hay. It's when the chickens eat the hay and it won' t pass through. Just my 2 cents. I'm sure not all chickens eat it.
