So I was out feeding the girls today, doing a bit of cleaning as well, and was in and out of the main coop a number of times. I happened to look up and noticed that I had a mouse nest in the very shallow nook created when the door was closed. When open, the nest started to fall apart. One pinkie had been smashed in the door already, unbeknownst to me. I saw the mom and more babies poking out, precariously balancing on the very shallow ledge. So what to do? Leaving them there would only result in more babies falling out and being smashed and/or eaten by my girls. Dispatching them myself was not an option, and moving them would only result in their death, as well. So I pulled out the remaining pinkies, and put them on the floor of the run. The result was pretty much what you would imagine, and I didn't feel too good about it. If my girls had found the nest themselves and gone to town, I wouldn't think twice about it. I know it's just a rodent, but offering up wiggling, helpless babies to my girls for food, just felt wrong. Ok, I've gotten it off my chest. Thanks for reading.
