Pinless Peepers

I have two bully hens that have been wearing pinless peepers for about two months. I was thinking maybe I should change them out periodically with new ones. Well the first one I removed a clump of dirt came off with it, (appeared to be dirt) and it made her bleed for a bit. Should I put some Vaseline around the peeper before removing it? And how often do you all replace them?

I'd apply antibiotic ointment. Sometimes when the Pin Less Peepers are removed the birds do not revert to aggressive behavior.

Good advice from @sourland (as usual). Maybe you could try leaving the peepers off for a while to see how they act.
