Hello,

I was wondering what a pip in the air sac looked like? Does anyone have some candling picture or can provide me with a good description. I have never had to check but would like to know what it looks like before it happens.

Thanks

by the time that actually happens your hatcher should be at the point where it shouldn't be opened... with that said IF you candle you will see a distinctive difference between the air cell and the sac which contains the chick. You will see something sticking into the air cell, that would be the chicks beak.

Thanks klf... I am aware of the lockdown policy and follow it strictly. However, if my hatch was running late (like day 23 or 24) without a pip, I would open up the incubator to candle... I wanted to know for that reason.

Does the beak remain in the air cell the entire time? Will you be able to see that in candling?

Thanks again

you can usually see the beak moving when it is in the air cell. In my experience it is usually right against the shell too, which is where they will pip the exterior. I wish I had some white(they show easiest)eggs hatching now but they aren't due for another 2 weeks.

Wow! Cool. That helps.... I figured not a lot of people will have pictures of it (due to the nature of lockdown) but its cool to envision it.

If I have a broody on a nest, I will candle frequently to see how far along they are. I have candled up until the end. When you candle, you will see the air sac but you will clearly see the baby's head/beak in there..definite difference!
