Pipd's Peeps!

So, apparently there was a pretty big storm last night, which I slept through entirely. But I went out to the birds this morning to find a tree that has been threatening to fall ahd fallen, but only because a nearby tree that had no indications of falling fell and pushed it over. Yikes! The fence is mostly down between the mini yard and the main chicken yard now, though not enough that I think any of them will get out, and there's a tree propped up on the coop addition. No damage done to the coop, thank goodness, but I'm pretty sure that we've lost a fence post and the fence is too crunched to fix. :hmm Oh, well, it's much better than it could have been.

Anyway, I grabbed a few pictures while I was out there. The closer fence here was the temporary one I put up to introduce the pullets last year, and I *had* been using it for broodies and bringing Elly out for visits, but I guess I'm done doing that now!

Doesn't look too bad from this angle, but the fence is crumpled here. I'm not sure if that fence post is bent or if the ground was soft enough for it to move that much.

This hutch was sitting in there for a bit of shelter. I thought at first that the wind must have been so strong it knocked that over, but then I noticed that one of the trees that fell had a big ol' root sticking out that most likely pushed it over. I'm just glad it didn't get crunched or something!

As you can probably see in the above pictures, the hens are checking it out thoroughly. I probably would have cleaned up a bit more, but they were just having so much fun that I figured it wasn't too big of a deal to leave it as is for now. :love

Sad thing is, I was just thinking that that one tree was going to go soon and I probably should move some things to prepare for it... Oops!

Anyway, we're on day 14 for the eggs! Thank goodness we didn't lose power in the storm last night! Tonight is candling night, so fingers crossed for a good prognosis on them, since I really couldn't see anything through those dark shells last week! :fl

We are 6 for 6 on the eggs! To my great surprise, egg number Six, which was out in the cold and seemed partially frozen when I collected it, is actually developing!! One week to go! :fl Come on, babies!

:jumpy We have entered lock down!! :jumpy

Okay, technically last night was lock down, but I was busy finishing this midterm/essay thing that I just sent in, so here I am! :p It is now spring break for me, so I should have a bit more time to be around here, and, of course, post pictures of babies! All six eggs have survived to lock down and are now set for arrival around Sunday! :fl

This was when they were first moved for lock down. Eggs Deux, Quatre, and Cinq have been rocking and rolling and aren't pointing the same way they were in these pictures anymore, but the other three are still. I *think* I saw Un rock a bit, but can't be sure. Hopefully their stillness just means they're ready and don't need to shift into position like the other three... :fl

In other news, we got another frost overnight after a few days of warm temps and off-and-on rainy yuckiness and beautiful sun. Reinette was very disapproving of the cold. (Clearly, this was my doing. )

Oh yes, and since we had such nice warmth for a few days, Elly has moved back outside, just in time for the babies to hatch. She's doing well, and hopefully will integrate into the flock again in no time. So far, I have her separated until free-range time, and then let her range with the flock. The only ones having any issue with her are, to my surprise, Callette and Lydda, particularly Callette. I'm sure they'l calm down once they realize that this isn't a clone come to replace them. ;)

We have an internal pip! I was just about to fall asleep and I heard peeping in the incubator!! Who needs sleep, anyway?! :wee

EDIT: Surprise! Egg Trois has jumped right to the beginnings of an external pip!! Uploading directly from my phone, so sorry if the quality is bad.

Had to peel myself away from the incubator to get lunch, because I guess food is necessary to survival? Anyway, I thought I'd give a quick progress report. We've got lots of peeping and rocking going on in the bator from Un, Deux, Trois, and Cinq. Nothing so far from Quatre or Six, but Six was set a day after the others, so no surprise there. Looks like Cinq is in a hurry to make a first appearance, though. It's suddenly gone from a small crack to shell flaking off, even ahead of Trois, who pipped before it!

I will not spend the whole day staring at eggs (she says doubtfully). Hopefully busying myself with other things will make the wait for babies go by faster. Hopefully...

Meanwhile, in a surprise twist, Callette and Elda were having a heart-to-heart this morning after I opened the coops for the day, which hopefully means Elly's been accepted (by her, at least) back into the flock. :fl Here they are giving me dirty looks for interrupting their private meeting.
