Pipd's Peeps!

Pics
Well I think you deserve a break until you can get more supplies. I'm glad Skua did so well except for Mabel. Mabel must be the meanie of the flock. There usually is one in the bunch.

It sounds like Indigo is almost to that laying stage. Then comes the broody stage. How did she grow up so fast? They were little fluff balls not to long ago. :D

I hope that Kates foot gets better soon. Poor baby needs to quit inspecting that porch and stay off that foot. :D

Have a great day and thanks for the update

Ah, Mabel isn't a meanie, she's just very strict and stern and doesn't like things to change in her flock. She and Skua had it out again last night, but I kind of stepped back and let them fight it out. Reub stepped in to break them up, and I think Mabel came out on top in the end, so hopefully they're done with their fighting. I have Skua in the mini yard while I'm not out there, so at least they aren't fighting without me there to keep it from going too far.

Yes, Indigo, I couldn't believe it!! She was just a baby only a few months ago! And then yesterday, she squatted for Reuben and, well, there goes that happy little family image I had in my mind of them...

And Miss Kate, she's a worrier. No wonder she's always working on it, she's got to make sure everything is just so. I'm just going to keep her bandaged until I'm sure she's healed enough not to do it again.

Meanwhile, my melting point is... one cute Cochin with a tilted head :love :love

I got a bunch of pictures of them crawling all over my lap, but they were all out of focus or someone moved and blurred it. So to finish off, here is Elly after she came over and chased the babies off. Doesn't she look so ashamed?

Gorgeous pics of the babies and I will still call them the babies.

I've missed those sweet little faces.

It looks like Elly was saying enough of the babies this is my mom and my time. She is so sweet.

Thanks so much for sharing the pics they made my day. Have a great one.

I did a bad thing today. I let chicken math win. But it's not my fault! I couldn't help myself! They were too cute to resist!!

Be prepared for pictures on Thursday when I pick them up. ;)

They are bantams of a breed I have, but of a variety I've never had and always, always, ALWAYS wanted. It's super rare and you never see them for sale... hence the chicken math winning against my willpower.

Heehee, sorry for leaving you hanging there! It was a LOOONG car ride to Chicago to pick them up! Here they are: SILKIED BANTAM COCHINS!! :weee

Please note--these are NOT Silkie x Cochin mixes--they are pure Cochins with Silkied feathering! :D That's what's so rare about them! Regardless of their rarity, though, I have wanted these for years, ever since first laying eyes on them, but they are so rare that even searching for them, I have never seen any for sale anywhere. When I saw them for sale (and within driving distance, no less!!) I had to jump on it! I was practically in tears with the thought of passing them up, I wanted them so badly!

So here they are! I originally wanted two pullets and a cockerel, but one of the cockerels that I didn't pick was so bonded with one of the pullets that he kept trying to fly into the box with them, and so I decided to take him, too. I also felt a little bad that I was buying both pullets and leaving their owner with all those cockerels leftover, because I know how hard it is when you have too many roosters and no place to put them. She gave him to me for free for buying both pullets. :)

Anyway, here is the cockerel I had asked for, black just like my past bantam Cochin had been:

Here is the free cockerel, a red Cochin:

And the girls. One of them is quite a bit smaller than the rest of them, but it must just be genetics, because she said she had another smaller one as well. Both pullets are red.

Here's the bigger girl, who would not come out from behind the red cockerel and pose for a picture.

1000

And the little girl, who has a bit of blue in her as well as being red:

1000

A size comparison between her and the black cockerel. To be fair, the black cockerel is 2 weeks older and a little bit bigger than all of them, though.

The reds all hatched just 4 days before my babies, so they are about 13 weeks old. Mr. Black hatched April 27, making him closer to 15 weeks.

They're in quarantine, and settling in. The red cockerel is so sassy already, and the black one is so talkative! :love I'm in love all over again with this variety, having them in person! :love

Working on names still, and open to suggestions! ;) My mom and sister keep calling the bigger pullet Donna, but I'm not 100% sold on that name yet. I have been looking, but nothing has stood out just yet.

They are beautiful. I've never heard of a silkied cochan before. They must be rare. I love the red coloring on the girls. This was worth the wait I was dieing of curosity.
