Pipe Dream Step 3

So glad you decided to join us.

Welcome to BYC, Aaron! Glad you decided to join our flock. Good luck in your plans to become self-sufficient working out. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. When it comes to getting your chickens, do you have any breed preference?
Thanks Michael!

I am probably going to start out with a dozen hens, 4 Buff Orpingtons, Dominiques, and New Hampshire Reds. (I may select the Barred Rock instead of the Dominique but right now the D has the edge). And depending how I feel when I order the chicks, I may include a couple turkeys.

You're welcome. I've had all of those breeds at one time or another over the years. I still have some Buff Orpingtons in my flock and love them. They are very friendly, calm, and gentle. My children, and now my granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) made lap pets of them. Barred Rocks and Dominiques are both great breeds and based on my experience, there's little reason to choose one over the other. If egg production is a priority for you, my BRs were slightly better layers than my Doms, but I think you will be happy with either breed. Good luck with your flock.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcomes! I hope everyone had a special (and tasty) Thanksgiving!
