Ok so I have a late hatcher who has been pipped for almost three days now.. The lil one has a good hole for its beak and is still moving/cheeping.... I blame myself as it was 2 days past due when I opened the bator to pull out the other chicks, shut bator down, then an hour later I hear peeps.. Search the whole room thinking a chick had gotten missed or fallen out of hatcher, I then notice the peeping is from the hatcher OOPS, so i look in and their is a Bobwhite egg pipped but not out yet, quickly turn bator back on, and wait well yesterday I noticed the humidity was too low, so i put warm water in hoping that that would help, no go... As of this morning still not out... So my question is do i intervene or not... I have alwyas followed the rule that if they cant make it out on their own then i dont want to breed them soi wont help,BUt this time it may be my fault.. So you see my conundrum....

5/11/10 Alright so i went ahead and left them in the bator.. Get A call sun at work from my sister saying that we have babies (they werent due to go into lockdown until sun.)

i was flabbergasted... I get home and their had been 8 chicks hatch in the bator with the turner on...So i quickly get some warm water and open the bator to get the eggs out of the turner, add some extra water for fear of humididty drop... Get everythig settled in come back about 20 minutes and the eggs are dripping water and the 8 babes are soaked, so run out and put together a brooder, get the wet ones into the brooder , take a syringe and suck out as much water as i can, close the bator... Done... Well i go back to make sure humididty is down and temp is right and I have 10 more babies

.... Less then a half hour after the eggs were taken out of hathcer , then had top taken off so i could remove the live babies ,after two power outtages, and me almost drowning them , I now have 26 happy healthy Cotrurnix babies... I think I may ahve this incubating thing down pat...

When its my fault and it's gone that long, I help.
And I give poly-vi-sol (w/out iron) as soon as it's dry.

And I give them physial therapy for the squashed up limbs to get the blood moving.

After that it's in the Big Guy's hands.

I, myself, don't completely follow the "don't help" rule. I've had some chicks that have pipped, but are just tooooo big to zip inside the egg. So after 24 hours, I give them a little help. If I were you, I'd help that poor little guy. Pick away some of the membrane...but stop if the membrane starts bleeding too much. But I doubt it does considering the time frame. When I do this, if there's no blood present, I'll actually zip the shell for the chick...but let it finish making it out of the egg on it's own. It's luck of the draw with this situation...but most of the time my chicks turn out just fine. Good luck!

Since you opened the bator when it was most likely pipped internally, then shut it off, I would help. At least zip around the shell for it to see if it can make it out the rest of the way. The one time I hatched bobs, they pipped at least a day before they hatched, but they did hatch. 2 days of being pipped would worry me.
I rarely help, but if it is something that I think I've done (too dry in the hatcher, opening the bator, etc.) I will give a little help

Good luck

We are the Chicken EMT's!

I hadnt even finished the Poll and was like wow i have replies.... LOL

I'd definitely help. I've heard the pip to hatch rule is about 24 hours but did not know about zip to hatch. I waited too long and lost a baby that probably would have lived...I think my humidity was off as it was my first batch of banties so I helped 2 more that zipped and then nothing and now they are growing and beautiful!
