I have a chick that has been pipped for about 20+ hours and I thought he needed a little help like I always do when it has been that long. I pulled back just a little bit of shell and all of the sudden it started bleeding pretty badly. I took a paper towel and dabbed some of the blood up that was on the surface. I put it back in the incubator so it would still be warm but I don't know what else to do. I also noticed that there was no egg tooth on the chick's beak. I don't know if this helps or not but I thought I would throw that out. Here is a picture:

If it's bleeding, then it's not ready to come out. Leave it in the bator, but make sure you put moist paper towels near it so the membranes don't dry out. Keep an eye on it. After several hours and the bleeding has stopped, and if you notice the veins have dried up and it still hasn't progressed, THEN you can try to help it. When I have a chick like this that doesn't have an egg tooth, I will chip the top of the shell all the way around, just as it would look if the chick had zipped. Then put it back in with the moist paper towels and see if the chick will push itself out. Give it time. If it's stuggling to breath or hasn't progressed, pop the top of the shell off. Leave is sitting in the bottom and put it back in the bator. It will eventually kick out. Crossing my fingers for your little chicky!

My little chick is making progress, with my help, of course!
