I want to cry right about now. I live in Chatham county and the courthouse was so much a part of this county and downtown Pittsboro. It's so depressing. The only thing good is that everyone got out safely.
My Dad lives in Siler City and I pass it all the time to go see him. It is very sad....such a wonderful landmark. Pittsboro is such a cute little town. Maybe they can rebuild it? I haven't see the extent of the damage yet. They were doing repairs/renovations on it and they have a new courthouse across the street but the Historical Society or some group had a museum on the 1st floor. So much history will be lost.
Court was still held regularly in the old courthouse along with meetings etc. The old woodwork was irreplaceable. I'm going to need horse feed soon and I dread going into Pittsboro and having to see it firsthand. The last report I saw said it looked like a complete loss.
My MoM grew up in lumberton/siler city one of her Sisters still lives in pitsboro used to be a small dairy farm on the way out of town you turned at a old closed down feed store it was owned by braxtons I am a hewitt/ brafford on my moms side it has been a few years ago I was down there for a reunion I like both towns a lot this is sad to hear.
The clock tower of the Chatham County Courthouse collapsed overnight after a fire severely damaged the building Thursday afternoon.
About 15 firefighters poured water on hot spots at the still-smoking building at 12 East St. Friday morning. The clock tower fell into the building between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m., and all the floors have collapsed.
"Everything is just pancaked on top of each other, which is making (the fire) hard to put out," Pittsboro Fire Chief Daryl Griffin said.
