Welcome to BYC.
I would recommend buying sexed chicks from a major hatchery.
Less chance of being lied to about breed and less chance of bringing home sick birds.
If you can convert a shed that is easiest. I would avoid a coop you cannot walk in.Thanks for the quick reply.
Any recommendations on online Hatcheries? Only 1 major hatchery on Long Island that I know of.
I will try and cancel the coop order as it has not been shipped yet.
So if I allow for 3-4 sf per hen when I build the coop, any other breeds recommended given info on 1st post?
Thanks DLIf you can convert a shed that is easiest. I would avoid a coop you cannot walk in.
Because you will be dealing with real winters, consider a solid pitched roof on the run too. That will make keeping an outdoor area during winter much easier. You can just put tarps up on the walls to block the wind.
I keep 16 different breeds here in NY. They all do well. Even the White Leghorns.
You could use that. Or polycarbonate. Thanks DL
So I guess 2x4 pressure treated framing would be needed for the run to support some snow on the roof as well as wind load needs? Would you use galv steel roof or similar ?
