So I'm planning on getting chickens within the year. I plan on making a chicken tractor and having RIR. My big concerns right now is having a dog on the property that likes to kill chickens (have to make the tractor super secure) and making sure I don't kill them myself lol

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Dogs are definitely a big concern for many chicken owners. Here are a couple links on dogs and chickens

Here are a few links on building chicken tractors as well

Best of luck! Welcome to our community.

I wanted to train my dog to guard the chickens, but I've been told his breeds aren't good for it (lab x blue heeler), but I may still try. We're planning on getting adult birds, so that may not help.

The best plan for dogs and chickens is NEVER let them meet. Dogs + chickens generally = dead chickens. If they alternately share a common yard - it won't be long before someone inadvertently leaves them both out at the same time. A Eureka moment for the dog, carnage for the chickens.

I don't know about Labs around poultry but, do know of someone who had several cattle dogs and they did not molest her birds. One especially took it upon herself, to make rounds and check out the entire farm. She watched the sky for raptors, and kept everything else treed or away from her flock.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Drumstick diva has given you some excellent advice regarding the enmity between dogs and chickens. Dogs and chickens typically do not mix well. Dogs just naturally view chickens as either prey, or as chew toys. We receive lots of letters from new members who are horrified because their seeming benign dog (even small breeds like chihuahuas) suddenly and unexpectedly decided to chase and kill their chickens. And once a dog has killed a chicken, it is virtually impossible to break him from doing it again. The best plan is to keep either the dogs or the chickens (or both) in an enclosure. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your chickens.
