So I'm currently brainstorming ideas for a garden that will mostly feed my rabbits, though we will be eating some of it as well. I'm very interested in food that stores well over winter at room temp/coolish temps. I have two attic closets that stay very cool (but not freezing) that I can use to store things in. I'm also thinking about trying a small plot of grain, maybe oats. I could use the oat straw for rabbit nesting material as well. I have a few things picked out, but I'm not sure if I'll use all of them as we have limited space (Double lot in town).

List so far
  • Winter squash (Butternut?)
  • Pumpkins
  • Various herbs (In small planters)
  • Oats or another grain
  • BOSS
  • Beets
  • Sweet Potateo
  • Green beans (Leaves for rabbits, beans for us)
  • Blackberry bush(s)?
  • Kale
  • Rutabega (Swedish Turnip?
I'll probably have some other things for us but this is mostly just rabbit stuff.

Hay is great. It's the thing a rabbit eats most of, and stores fine as long as you keep it dry.

I don't see carrots on your list-- they store well in the same conditions as beets and turnips/rutabagas.

That's what I was going to say: "What, no carrots?"

One of my bunnies absolutely loves the purple carrots. The others are just okay with any carrot.

Carrots keep well over the winter. My dad used to dig a "pit" about three feet wide by four feet long, line it with burlap sacks, and put the carrots and turnips in there. He put another burlap sack on top and filled in with dirt. The whole storage area was about one foot deep, with two bales of straw on top.

Starting just before Christmas, we would shift the straw bales, dig at the edge, pull up the burlap sack, and "harvest" turnips and carrots, until they started growing again in the cold frames in the spring.

Good morning gardeners. I hope you’re all well. We’ve had a lot happening here and I’ve just been maintaining what’s here. Our temps have been in the 90s and low 100s so not too bad so far. I am pretty sure my dad is going to have to start dialysis soon. He’s 91 so not a spring chicken and he doesn’t always have a great attitude so not sure how that will work out. Keeping my fingers crossed. Anyway, we were looking for something in our old pics and came across these from Sept 2014. The mesquite trees aren’t quite 7 years in the ground yet and after the first year we haven’t provided any supplemental water.
