Planning the rest of my life... (Moving questions)

UC Davis is in CA near Sacramento. It's pretty much out in the country. It's surrounded by lots of farmland. The school mascot is the Aggies if that tells you anything! They also have a Vet school there.

It's about 15 minutes from Sacramento and an hour and 15 from San Francisco. Mild climate, no snow, very eco-conscious community. Let me know if you have any questions about the area.

Good luck with your choice!

Thanks everyone for the advice so far! I have a lot of research yet to do, and I'm hoping to be able to travel to some of these places before I decide.

Luckily my undergrad education is completely paid for by scholarships and whatnot, so I won't have to worry about that. I am gearing towards possibly doing podiatry school, which greatly limits where I can actually go. I believe there are only eight podiatry schools in all of the US.

Ultimately I would love to go to a school in a state I will end up living for some years. I really don't want to stay in NJ. I did briefly look into our one NJ med school, and it is in Newark of all places (Terrible city, ugly area, VERY expensive school, even for in state residents). If I decided to stay around here, I would probably look into John's Hopkins, which is in Maryland. Beautiful school and a nice area, but I don't really want to stay on the east coast. I'm not ruling that out as an option though. It's only about three or four hours from home.

I never really thought about schools out of the country, but its always another possibility! This early in the game, I'm not going to rule anything out.

As far as paying loans and what not, I will have to consider all of that too. I'm hoping to get some scholarships, but I know I won't be able to get a 100% one like I did for my undergrad. My friend who is going for podiatry told me I have an excellent chance of getting a 50% scholarship, but that still leaves me with thousands of dollars in loans. Hopefully I will be able to pay some of that off with the money I make doing internships and then the rest will get payed off when I get a more steady job. Of course, moving out on my own also means I'm going to have to consider health insurance, and where I will get money to pay for everything else...which probably means working a job while going to school.

So much to consider, but I figure other people have done it successfully!

Well here in VA where I'm at (and I'm out in the country.. and I'm in "horse country" at that) we have UVA in Charlottesville area -then there's MCV in the Richmond area - you have Mary Washington in Fredericksburg (but you still have "country living" not too far from it), you have all the big hospitals up North in the DC area - (way expensive though).... then of course, there's Maryland - Johns Hopkins....

You can request a packet from the local chamber of commerce's.

Plus check the laws, see if it's ok to keep chickens there, because it's just easier if you don't have to hide them...

Have you looked at Dartmouth, in Hanover, New Hampshire? It would be an easy one for you to visit on a weekend or break. It's located on the New Hampshire/Vermont border in a very scenic rural area. Hanover is certainly no major city, population 11,000! They have a monstrous facility that's constantly being expanded, and I think they're a highly respected medical school (Ivy League), but I'm no expert on that, I just see a lot of their research printed in medical advice magazines, articles etc, and it's where a lot of people in my area go for surgeries, major medical attention, etc. Here's a link to their website:

UCDavis might be in the country but the UC Davis Medical Center is in one of the worst areas of Sac. They would have a guard walk my family out to the parking lot after visiting me.

Why not University of Utah? Salt Lake is a City but close to skiing, hiking, and other outdoorsy type things. Contrary to popular belief - it is not a Mormon school.
