Plants for shade on run

I'm wanting to cover part of my run with a creeping plant to offer extra shade. What should I use that's safe for my girls to eat?

Look up native plants that are non-toxic and consider them first. Fruiting, flowering shrubs are nice for this.
Grape vines are very heavy, so serious framing would be necessary. Blackberries have killer thorns, as do hardy roses. Edible beans?
