Plastic tote chicken porthole feeder. Success or failure?

Thanks for replying. I'm thinking of using a tote to create more floor space between chicken feet while feeding - to keep the chickens spread out while they're eating. One of my 4 week old chicks was trampled under the chicken feeder. I assume it happened because all of the chickens were crowding around the feeder.
What kind of feeder are you using now?
Do you have multiple feeders...one being chicks sized that is away from the main feeder?

I had an additional separate smaller feeder when the chicks were smaller. Chick just got in the way. I will not separate mom and chicks from the flock. I am considering location and size of the feeder may be a factor. Current feeder location and size does not allow chickens to spread out. After talking with a neighbor, the trampled chick could have happened eventually anyway. I am figuring out how to offer more than one location for a feeder.

I would like to include a word of appreciation to you, Aart. I always appreciate your advice i have read throughout BYC.

I set up a creep feed area for chicks, even broody chicks.
It gives them a place to eat and drink, or even rest, without harassment.
Hard to see that the bottom row of wires are squeezed to make larger openings.
If you can't do a creep area, just multiple feeders and waterers are a good thing to have.

Not the best pic, but if you zoom in, you can see the tote in the coop. it has 8 ports, which has been more than enough for my 40 chickens. I did seal around the ports with silicone caulk. I have it set up on a couple 8" cinder blocks. It holds about 80# of feed.
