This is Eloise, she is a 2 year old Silkie hen given to me by the owners of a guinea farm when I went with my friend to castrate and band their bulls yesterday. While looking at the Silkies the owners use to hatch the guinea keets I noticed a hen who was hoping around and her leg seemed to be swollen. I asked the owners if I could examine her and they said I could. When I picked her up I noticed immediately that her leg was problematic. It was swollen, squishy, and scabbed. They asked if I wanted her and I said yes. When I got her home I bathed her and attempted to drain the leg. When I made a cut nothing came out. I made a cut in another spot and still nothing came out. I carefully removed the scab and pulled out yellow cheesy material. I also pulled out any feathers that were being smothered by the swollen leg and possibly causing infection and clipped her overgrown toenails. I cleaned her leg with iodine, applied antibiotic ointment, and applied blue kote. Eloise is living with my 2 pigeons because I don’t want my main flock to pick on her. I’m kicking myself for not taking a picture before I started treating her. Here are pictures from today of her leg. The black is the blue kote. I also know that she seems to have bumble foot on her other foot.

Any advice is welcome and appreciated.
Cheers, Aryeh.

The scabbing could be from walking on the swollen hock causing infection. It couldve been initially caused by an injury of some sort. Articular gout could be a possibility. Your treatment has been spot on. All you can do is wait and see how she recovers.
Does she have scaly leg mites? That would be an issue as well.

Wow, that looks like a big old infection similar to bumblefoot. She probably would benefit from an antibiotic, to treat any joint infection, but those are best obtained from a vet. Some can be found online. @casportpony, what would you suggest for antibiotics? Soaking that leg in warm Epsom salts water daily and doing a bit of cleaning it up would be good, followed by antibiotic ointment. I would probably wrap it, or place her on a clean towel or puppy pads in a dog crate with food and water.

The owners said she was born with her leg bent and unable to walk normally. Thankfully she does not have scaly leg mites.

Do you think the daily soaks would reduce the swelling or softness of her leg? Should I wrap her leg with gauze and vet wrap? I could keep her in a dog crate I have on some pee pads.

I would do them for several days at least and see if it improves. It sounds like she may have a large callous or scab from sitting on that hock. Try to keep her on a dry towel now or puppy pads fir now, and later when she is better, make sure her bedding is very dry. You could leave it open to air on the towel or puppy pad. If you do dress it, do not put the vet wrap on too tight. I have never dealt with such a thing.

I removed the scab after I bathed her on Sunday. The black in the photos is from the blue kote so I guess it could be scabbing now.
