Please Check my Chicken Math for Accuracy~

(I'm new at this and want to make sure I have my chicken math right.)

I got a call yesterday~ our feed store is getting golden and silver laced polish pullets in on the 2nd and wanted to know if i wanted to put some on hold!

OMG! YES!

Ive been wanting a polish for so long and they were so back ordered here i had given up..

Anyway, obviously we will have to get two pullets so they can be friends and not feel like outcasts because of their funny hairdoos and really, two would integrate better than one with our other 5 standard pullets (who are 8 weeks old) who may gang up on the newcomer....

However, my roommate says 7 chickens would be too many eggs for three people even if we are selling them and be too hard on the lawn...

my response~ 7? hahaha no... we would really only have 6 chickens because 2 polish hens = 1 large fowl right?

Here is the supporting information: polish hens weigh 4.5lbs, are not good foragers and aren't super strong egg layers.... therefore, two polish hens would have a combined weight of 9lbs (less than a jersey giant

and would have the combined egg laying and combined impact on the yard of say... one foraging LF! y viola! "6" hens.

What do you think?

If it were me, personally, Id get 10 polish pullets. Here's my reasoning- since 2 polish would equal 1 LF, and you have 5 big girls you'd need 10 little girls to even up your LF and bantam #s. But alas, I have a problem, and lots of chickens to prove it. But seriously, Id get at least 5

Eeeevryone knows you can't have LF and bantie in the same coop..

You are going to have to build a second coop for the little ones... but not wanting them to be cold at night, you are going to have to get enough to fill it up. If build the new coop the same size as the old coop - large enough for 5 LF, then to fill the banty coop you will need 10 polish. Keeping in mind that 50% may turn out to be roos, you will need 20 polish. Then the sad fact that some will die should be factored in... you are really better off just getting 30.

AND if you had room in your old coop to add two banties in the first place, then you should finish filling that space with one more LF.

Honestly.. your chicken math is terrible.

It's been years since I was in school, ok decades, but here's how I add it up. Polish don't count towards a total becuase they're so cute. So even if you have 5 and add two polish, it's still 5. Like I said, it's been a while.......
