Hey guys! ok so I was wandering how people picked their first breed of chicken that they owned, how many you started off with and what breed it was. I really want a lot of people to reply so I can like compare the replies to see which is the most common. Can yall tell me your first breed of chickens, how many your started off with, and why you chose that breed. I hope I get some good replies and I cant wait to compare results

My first birds were not planned and they were backyard mutt bantams that my neighbor gave me as a trade for some guineas. After that I found a nursery an hour or so away that sold started chicks about 8 weeks old and I added my EE, a RIR, 2 BR, a Sebright, and 2 Japanese bantams. Those were the breeds he carried, so that is what I bought. I cannot recall the first breed that I purposefully ordered after research. I think it must have been a bantam assortment and then that is when I discovered how much I love Old English Game bantams.

hmmm, well, the first chickens I had that were "mine" my parents picked out. they got 6 ISA browns. I didn't much care for their personalities, but they were my responsibility.

since then, as an adult my first chickens were hand me downs from my sister, a dorking roo, a dorking hen and an ISA brown. I later hatched babies from those hens. the Dorking/ISA chick I would consider to be my first chicken. and his 2 brothers who were both full dorkings. then I bought some barred rocks. (my only girls)

I really like barred rocks, and when I'm able to have chickens again that's what I would pick. I love their personality.

Just about one of everything---NH reds, RSL, BSL, bantams of a few different breeds, mutts, EEs, Leghorns, Buff Orpingtons, and a bunch of others I've either forgotten or don't know. I had somewhere around 40 or maybe more.... not exactly sure but I was getting more than 2doz eggs per day, and they weren't all that reliable individually in the laying department.

My first chickens were rented, I wanted to see if I like it before I got too involved. Red Rhode Island, Brahma and a Welsummer. They were matured birds. Loved them all. All different personnalities. Red Rhode Island was going much farter than the other 2 when free ranging. Also at the bottom of the pecking order. Brahma and Welsummer were really calm birds.

As a kid I worked on a egg farm. The breed of choice there was the white leghorn, and I have long loved the leghorn in its many varieties. To me there is no bird that is more attractive, and all those eggs are just a bonus.
I agree with you there. I've thrown in my lot with the Chantecler and Ameraucana, but if I couldn't have either of those I would choose Leghorns. They are fantastic, useful, and beautiful birds. I didn't like my first few but later batches were much better.

Thanks for yalls input! I hope to get some more. Oh I actually started with leghorns and I fell in love with them. I started with three

I started with a Belgian d’uccle, light Brahma, ameraucana, barred rock, Jersey Giant, gold laced Wyandotte and a lavender Orpington. Unfortunately the d’uccle died at a young age and all but the barred rock and Jersey Giant were cockerels so them I went and got 3 backyard mutt bantams and have them and my BR and Jersey.
