I already started orpingtons (eggs are in bator now)... researched about them, visited farm to meet them, love their personality and beauty.
How are BLRW different compared to orpingtons? I know they have different appearance and colors already

I am wondering about the personality and egg laying ability?
If anyone raise (or raised) both breeds, could you compare them for :
1) personality
2) egg laying ability
3) ease of raising
4) cold/heat tolerance
5) sociable with other chicken breeds
Thanks!

ive been considering between getting a wyandotte and a orpington but ive decided on orpington.
from what ive heard and read a wyandotte will lay more often but they sometimes can be a bit aggressive, they both are cold hardy and not so great in heat and orpingtons are a bit bigger so they might eat more

Katy,
Thank you for your great answers!
It helped me a lot to understand a breed (BLRW).
Thanks again.

My wyandottes aren't the least bit aggressive.

I have a buff orp, Ophelia, and a golden laced wyandotte, Topaz, they are both fantastic. Ophelia is considerably larger than Topaz but she lays less often maybe 3 eggs a week compared to 4 or 5. However, her eggs are HUGE whereas Topaz lays nice large brown eggs. None of Ophelia's have ever fit in a standard egg carton.

As to personality, Ophelia is a giant doll. She is super friendly and doesn't mind being picked up and carried around, I can't do that for long though since she's pretty heavy. Topaz is even more friendly, she follows me around anytime I'm in the run with them. Loves being picked up and always stops for a pet. My 9yo daughter can catch her easily and loves to carry her around.

They are both pretty fluffy so do well on those rare cold days we get here. I don't know how they do with the heat as this will be my first summer with them but from other so cal chicken folk I've heard they manage fine.

As for sociability, they are the only ones of their breed in a mixed flock and have no trouble whatsoever. I love them both, beautiful chickens to look at too.
