I just had the same exact thing happen !
Was away for the weekend, came home and one hen is missing !
Kids are very upset. No signs of entry - no digging - top of pen is covered with wire to prevent overhead entry - no feathers, blood etc. anywhere that I can see. The coop is not large - - no rafters - or nesting boxes yet (working on building them - this is a new flock and not laying yet) - to hide in.
Pen is a chain link dog kennel - with chicken wire around the bottom edge and bent out by 2' and burried. I was hoping a neighbors kid let one out on accident and that she'd show up when it got dark - but nothing.
Any ideas ? I was thinking the same thing - someone stole her !
Or, she got out and the red tail hawk in the area got her
but not sure how she could get out. Could something have gotten in and taken her out so neatly ? And even so, how would it fit through the wire ? the gap around the door isn't large - either. I'm so confused and sad ....
I lock them in their coop at night to prevent night time predators, but this past weekend I had to leave the door open. The coop is raised off the ground, solid bottom (actually, the darn thing is built better than most houses - ) all doors lock and there are no holes.
I'm so confused - and if she did get caught - I hope my kids don't find her remains ....
