hi all, i joined back in june as a new chicken keeper, we have four girls and out of the four only three have been laying, two lay all the time and a third lays for about 3 out of 7 days then stops then lays again, this morning we had three eggs after nearly five days of just two eggs, which is the norm for our girls, however just been back to there nest box and there were another two eggs today making five eggs in one day from four birds this has never happened before, one of the eggs from this afternoon is very white is this strange or can a chicken lay two eggs in on day and why are we starting to get white ones to ? hope this is not a silly post as we are very confussed with having this happen after so long. thank you in advance, i hope you can help

Do you have a white egg laying breed? It is possible for a new layer to lay 2 eggs in one day. It's not very common, but it can happen. With new layers, eggs can be very strange and random. Eggs can be laid while walking around or while on the roost. Eggs can be laid before the shell gets deposited, or before the brown 'coating' can be applied. Basically, new layers can be very erratic, and it can take several weeks for all the parts of the egg laying system to start working together on a regular basis.

thank u, it was just a suprise seeing more eggs today lol, we have four warren hens xbhe white egg is longer and a funny shape so possibly a new layer

As a general rule the shell pigment is only applied about 1 hour before the egg is laid. Though it is unlikely it is possible for an egg to be laid before the shell gland can lay down the color. Two eggs in under 24 hours would increase the likelihood of a white egg being laid by a Brown eggs layer....... I guess.
