I’m just not sure how wet/dry it should be in there

I'm not sure if you are pouring oil in there? That would be bad, AS NEEDED moisten a little Q tip or cotton ball and apply it very gently to the membrane and avoid the mouth.

Yes I’ve been putting a tiny amount in when it appears dry- I just don’t want to over do it

Just dab a bit on when the membrane starts to look dry, is the duckling yawning/clicking still?

Does he respond when you tap the shell, or whistle? Could you post a picture of the egg?
