Hi Everyone,

Today I noticed that my beautiful Legbar hen is looking very under the weather. She is hunched up, has diarrhea and is very lethargic. She seems to have also lost a substantial amount of weight extremely quickly.

I have called the vets and they advised that, given the symptoms, there isn't much that can be done for her at this point. Because of this, coupled with the lockdown, they also advised against having an appointment and so I'm not entirely sure what the issue could be. However, I have read about coccidiosis and it looks like this could be the culprit. I'm going to get some Coxoid tomorrow to see if this helps her.

She still seems interested in her food and is drinking OK and so I'm really hoping she'll be able to pull through with the right care and treatment. I was wondering if anyone here has experienced these same symptoms within their flock and whether the hen in question made a full recovery?

Any advice or suggestions would be really appreciated as this hen is such a lovely little lady <3

Sorry about your chicken. How old is she? Does she lay eggs? How does her crop feel—empty, full, hard, doughy, or puffy? Coxoid or amprollium is a good treatment for coccidiosis. That is usually a problem in young chickens, but sometimes happens to older chickens who have immunity issues. Worms can also cause problems. I would try the Coxoid to see if it helps. Where are you located?

Thanks for your reply. :)

She's around 3 years old. She's just had her moult and so hasn't been laying for a month or two now. The crop felt a little empty.

Thanks for the advice re: worms. Would you know how best to treat this if this is the issue? Would I be able to carry this treatment out alongside the Coxoid? Is there any dietary supplement I could give her that might help?

I'm located in South West England.

Thanks again for your help!
