One of my hens has what we believe is egg peritonitis, she has a big white lump (egg) sticking out of her abdomin and she can barely walk. Going to a vet or getting antibiotics is too expensive what should i do?!?!

From what I understand, EYP is internal laying which causes a fluid build up. If you can see an egg, she's probably eggbound. You can sit your hen in a warm bath, with water up past her vent and let her soak for 15-20 minutes to see if she'll go ahead and lay it. The warm water will relax her. Good luck, and if you try that and it doesn't work, maybe we can come up with something better to try. Keep us posted!

Thanks, actually at first we thought it was a stuck egg so we tried that it did relax her but nothing happened. Should i puncture the egg let the liquids flow out and try to bandage the wound?

Is the egg sticking out of her vent? I don't quite understand what you mean by "wound". If it's coming out of her vent but stuck, you can try to ease the egg out. I'd be concerned about pieces of the egg being left behind if you break it. Can you get a picture of what's going on and post it here? That might help. If there's a lump in her abdomen, I wouldn't puncture that. You could probably put a little olive oil on her vent and try to feel around inside to see if you feel an egg. Sometimes it may take more than one soaking in warm water to get the egg out, and maybe the olive oil would help lubricate things a little to help her along.

It's below her vent, we had thought it was her vent but later realized it wasn't. It's an egg that fell into her abdomen from her ovum. It looks like a big squishy lump sticking out of her abdomen. I'm not sure if i should let her be or do something different. And we tried lubricating it and pushing it out but there's ittle room to push it out.

Wow. Well, that's something that is beyond what I'd know to do. I wish I knew what to tell you. Hopefully someone with some knowledge of that will come on soon and be able to help you. I still don't think puncturing anything at this point would be the way to go though. There are several people on BYC that are very knowledgeable and I'm sure will be online at some point today. Just hang in there as best you can until then. Sorry.

It's ok, thanks anyway. Today i had to separate her from the others because they attacked her. And i too hope someone can help.

We can try to keep your thread bumped up a little, and in the meantime, let me look at some threads on the issue. I'll see if there's someone you can private message that might know something about this.
