we are having a lot of trouble. I have been hatching out all our birds for 2 years and after every hatch we clean the incubator and sterilize it so nothing can pass on. I have a 1 year old hen start acting funny. She would take a couple steps and sit down she was eating and drinking just fine. Other then her walking she was fine. She was like that for a week and got better She was fine that morning and I went to work and was planning on putting her back in the pen with the rest of the ducks since she had been fine for 2 days but when I got home she had died. Now my neighbor has three that are doing the same thing. Well they live on the other side of town but still it is happening to theirs. We thought the drake had hurt mine but after she got better and died we realized that wasn't it. None of my ducks have done anything like that since and it has been 9 months since this happened to mine. Any ideas would be great. All my other birds have tested clean for everything in fact the duck that died was clean. We make sure all our live stock is clean from deceases.

Did you check to see if she was egg bound?

Could she have gotten into something Toxic?

mine will walk and sit if its really cold to keep their feet from freezing to the ground. usually one complains its cold out by doing her walk and sit. Not life threatening sorry.

Good questions, Kevin!

Without a necropsy, it can be difficult to say what killed them. Our state's ag university performs necropsies on ducks. Do you have a similar resource?

We thought about a [FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Nacropsy but we don't have a vet in the area that deal with poultry. I would say it was because it was cold because when mine done it it was very cold out. But these other ducks it isn't because of the cold since it is 60 some degrees out here. Arkansas weather is crazy. As for something toxic it isn't that we have kids and made sure our yard did n't have any kind of toxic plant in it and then we done it again when we got chickens and turkeys we done it again to make sure they could free range and be safe, then we got ducks and done it one more time so we are for sure there isn't anything toxic any where near us. Good to know. Thanks for the update. Watching the nutrition more closely sounds like a good move.

They might consider adding niacin to the water, or sprinkling brewer's yeast - just a little bit, like a tablespoon - on their food.

For niacin, the plain capsules, not no-flush or time release, just plain, 100 mg to 150 mg per gallon of water.

It helps the nervous system.
