Hey all!

My girl was off to the side this afternoon so I examined her and noticed a dirty bum. Brought her in for a cleanup bath and noticed a firm lump of something red hanging out of her vent. She also had a piece of soft shelled egg sticking out that I've removed. Is this a prolapsed vent or something more? I'm concerned her flockmates may have pulled out more than the vent. She's 2.5 years old and never had any issues until now.

Welcome To BYC

Yes, that's prolapsed tissue. It's concerning, I'm not sure what the longish thin piece is. I agree, the tissue may have been pecked and pulled on.

Giving her a good soaking and clean up can be helpful. You can use epsom salts in the water if you have those.
You can try pushing the tissue back inside once you get it cleaned, but it may not stay inside.
If it doesn't, then keep the tissue coated with oil, ointment or honey, you don't want it to dry out.

Is she pooping at all, leaking urates or poop?

Get Extra Calcium into her. 1 Calcium Citrate+D3 tablet once daily would be good to give, if you don't have that, then 1 TUMS daily will work.

What is her overall demeanor - is she alert, able/willing to drink? Work on hydration, then offer some wet mushy feed.

Thank you so much for your response. She seems alert and was grooming herself after I gave her a soak. I tried to push whatever it is back in with some petroleum jelly but it wouldn't go in completely and immediately came back out once she pooped.

She's currently in a darkened dog crate and is on a perch resting. I'm noticing she doesn't seem to want to move around the crate too much once she had found the perch. She is pooping and she ate some hardboiled egg that I hand fed her but hasn't wanted to drink since she's been inside.

I will get her some calcium and continue to give her soaks and keep that piece coated.

It looks almost like a torn piece of tissue, not the whole vent. If it dries up in a couple days you can cut it off. If she just tore the mucosa (lining) she’ll be fine but a full thickness tear can result in peritonitis (belly infection) and she’ll probably get very sick and crash in a few days.

How is she doing today?
She's eating eggs and greens if I hold food for her but I haven't seen her drink. She seems extremely uncomfortable when I apply moisturizer to her hanging tissues. She doesn't get off the perch or walk around the crate unless I move her so I can clean up. Her injury dripped small amount light colored fluid tinted with light pink blood overnight. She's pooping normal looking poop.

I'm sure it probably doesn't feel too good.

Hopefully this will heal o.k.

This evening after her soak she had more of her insides outside of her vent. In addition to the weird piece from yesterday, she had a bubble of something sticking out. I was able to push them all back inside but about an hour later she pushed it all back out 😞 I've attached a photo of what is outside of her as of this evening. She's been eating and pooping normal looking poop, considering. She was walking around the crate when she was eating tonight so she may have had a drink too.
