Hi could anyone please give me any ideas on what type of chicks these are? I didn't actually order any chicks from MMM, only a wafer thermostat kit. You can imagine how surprised I was when my post office called me at 8am this morning and said come pick up your baby chicks!

I went over and sure enough there they were, along with my thermostat of course. I asked the post lady if she was sure they were suppose to go to me, and she told me they were mine. When I got home I called MMM to ask them about it(because I didn't want an unexpected charge on my c.card) and they even said it was a mistake, but since they had already been sent out to me, just keep them. So now I have 29 baby chicks(one died during shipment) and the only thing they could tell me was 3 are suppose to be white cochins, and 1 a blue cochin. The other 25 are standard assortment! I just started raising chickens, and Im completely lost as to what they could be. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks
Shannon

Boy howdy! You could have anything! Well the reddish ones will likely be Rhode Island Reds or some kind of RIR sexlink/hybrid. The chipmunks are likely Ameracaunas/Easter Eggers. Anything with feathered feet is probably a Brahma or a Cochin. And the black and white ones are likely Barred Rocks. Good luck! What a special surprise. lol.

HI Shannon,

Sorry I am not good at identifying baby chicks but wanted to say welcome and congratulations. This must have been a huge shock.

I am sure someone will give you a list of exactly what you have there and if you have any problems keep asking the questions.

When |I was new to all of this I think I would have passed out to find I had suddenly got 29 chick, good luck to you and you know there is nothing like a baptism of fire.

Best wishes and well done.

i see an EE! oh my gosh they are SO sweet

Which one is the EE? The dark chipmunk looking ones, or the yellow with the dark brown stripe down the back?

Thanks Jena, Im sure I will have plenty more questions as I start getting more and more involved. Its funny how something starts out as my son's
4-H project and then becomes mine, lol.

I agree that it looks like you have got some Rhode Island reds. The little silver/ grey one looks like my cochins I have been trying to figure out the color on. The black ones in the last photo look like my black australorps. I am not sure on the chipmunk looking ones. I have 2 of those myself. I posted photos on here to see what everyone thought. Some said Welsummer, Old English game bantam, dutch. Do they look like these photos to you? Congratulations on your wonderful surprise!

all three with your feathered feet are the cochins they told you you should have. and definately the little blue/silver colored chick is a blue cochin, I have two of those little dudes.

That is completely awesome that you got surprise chickens!!!and for free. lmao. That is very neat.

I have a bunch of mystery chicks, some pure some mixes, and i'm just excited to see what they are going to be as they grow up, its all very exciting. this is my third year with chickens, and this year at the moment i have 40 chicks....X_x me and you both will have to wait till down the road when we find out what they all are, and what gender they all are, I'm just loving seeing how mine change day to day.

I have some 7 weekers and wow its amazing how much they change from day 1 to 7 weeks.

good luck, have fun, and congrats on the surprise babies!!!!
