My 1 yr old hen is acting very strange. She is making a hoarse sound, and holding her beak open. I looked and I didn't see anything in her mouth. I rubbed her neck and took her for a drink. She drank and was eating, but still making the noise and holding her mouth open. I am going to go look at another hen and see if I see a difference. Anyone know what could be wrong. It sounds like a strain yell. Thanks
Just went out, it sounds like she is gasping for air, kind of a wheeze like noise. Others look fine. Could she have something stuck in her throat/neck? I see nothing. I don't think that she will make it through the night. Any suggestions?

Im not really sure....but I can suggest....get her seperated from the others....keep her warm...and make sure she has PLENTY water. Try , with some help, to look down her throat. Make sure there are no obstructions. I am hopeing someone can help ya more. Is her poo normal? Discharge from the nose/eyes? I hope she makes it.

don't know... maybe an expert can help. All the best with her

I had a hen do that. If i can remember corectly she ate to much so it got stuck in her craw. if you go down to the base of her neck right above her brest. there is a little spot where you can feel a bump usually food in there. so what i remember is to make sure she gets water and to take the food away from her. If need be force water it will help desolve the food and make it softer for her to swallow rest of way. I hope it all works out for you.

use a flashlight and look down the throat for any obstruction.
look for any whitish/gray, or yellowish sores.
look for anything red (gapeworm).

feel along the throat for anything unusual.

could she have been exposed to dusts or mold?
any chemicals? (such as fertilizers, weed killers, etc)

observe for any other symptoms.

*Maybe you could slip a few drops of olive oil into her mouth with an eyedropper?? Is she drinking water??? Does it look like panting-- like they do when they are hot?

I had my one hen make similar noises the other day. She's my pushy one so I think when I put down some special treats she ate too fast or something. It didn't last long for her though. I've kept an eye on her for any problems but she now seems fine. Hopefully you have the same luck.
