Greetings beccamae421,
Yes, your girl is old, yes her immune system is not as efficient. But, I don't quit till the bird is gone.
Your chicken has a severe yeast infection, most likely external and internal. This can happen when the immune system is compromised due to another illness or old age.
I had this happen to my rooster Mr. Frito, when he had congested lungs. He is only four years old. Yeasts and fungus are hard to treat. Some are resistant to Nystatin, a common anti-fungal medication, which requires a prescription in California.
Here is what you can do.
Attack the yeast that has most likely invaded the chicken internally.
Treat the chicken, with oral Nystatin (if your vet can prescribe it),
.5 mL, every 12 hours, with an oral syringe.
If you can't get Nystatin, you can try Monastat (Miconazole Nitrate), some keepers have had success using it orally on their chickens, for sour crop.
Next address the external yeast/fungus.
Get a small 8 ounce spray bottle, fill it with distilled water. Add 2-3 drops Colloidal Silver, 1100 ppm. Spray the flesh that is covered in the white yeast, 3-4 times a day. Saturate it well, if it gets into the chicken's nostrils or eyes, no problem. It won't hurt her, in fact it's also great for nasal discharge and eye infections! I also make eye drops.
1100 ppm, is the most potent Colloidal Silver you can buy. Any Health Store should carry it. Or, you can order it on
Amazon for a lower price. But, this is urgent, and I would try to locate a store that carries it. Call around, before wasting your time driving there.
Severe yeast infections will kill a chicken.
I have used several things on stubborn yeast infections over the years, but, the colloidal Silver knocked it out.
And since your girl is up there, in age, she probably isn't laying anymore. So, you can even give her a drop orally, if you don't have success getting some anti-fungal medication.
I also use it orally to boost the effectiveness of a certain antibiotic I use on my sick chickens.
I am aware that some people are fearful of Colloidal Silver. But, this is due to misinformation. Do some research on it. It is very safe, natural, and effective for treating some of the most difficult infections, when used properly. It has literally saved one of my chickens. She should be gone by now, but she's still here and running around with the flock.
So, these are my thoughts on your chicken's problem. I hope they give you something new to look at. Maybe even a chance to save your hen.
God Bless and good health to you and your hen.
