Expert chicken friends, Poor Pretty Penny, my ameracauna green egg layer, has a prolapsed uterus! I'm not sure how old she is, but she's over 4. What next! I've tried gently pushing it back in. The first time after I did so, she laid an egg, so I gave her another bath and pushed it in again, but then she pooped. I'm not sure I'm pushing it back in correctly. Anyone have experience with this who would be willing to help me? Help!!! What is best to put on the inflamed red tissue? Preparation X or Honey, or...? I'm feeling heartsick and at my wit's end.

:hugs I don't have experience with prolapses but generally they say to keep the tissue moist, either honey or prep H. I've read that sometimes it takes a while before they stay in, so hang in there! Hopefully someone with actual experience will see this.

Honey or sugar syrup is good (sugar and water,) to use. Some use olive oil, hydrocortisone cream, Neosporin, but it doesn’t matter so much as just keeping the prolapsed tissue moist and lubricated at all times, so that it doesn’t dry out and turn leathery. Keep trying to push the prolapse in and hold it for a few minutes, but it may keep coming out. Try to stop her from laying temporarily by keeping her in the dark for 16 hours overnight, and letting her have 8 hours of daylight each 24 hours to eat and drink and walk around. This may take 3 days or so. Keep her separated from other hens while her prolapse is out.
