I'm telling you...my chicken had the exact same thing, same symptoms. The St. John's Wart helped her. Don't give up on her. Everyone wanted me to put my chicken down also but I did not have the heart to do so. She is a normal as a chicken can be now. So glad I didn't listen to anyone else. Good Luck

You were lucky. I'm still waiting for the miraculous recovery that people say that they have had. I've lost 40+ birds to Marek's and St John's Wort/Hypericum has not done a thing to help. That being said, Marek's can and does go into remission. Birds can stay that way for days/months...but, if they are ever put under stress, Marek's will come back and, when it does, watch out. Rarely does a chicken get a second remission.

I hope your chicken responds and she makes a full recovery. Do not give up on the vitamins. Give them along with the SJW.

you should start seeing some slight improvments in 4days and the legs will start working in about 7days....just give it time....make sure she has food available at all times and give a little vitamins in her water. Sorry to jump in here- I don't have anything of real value to add.
I've never delt with Marek's- I have vaccinated chicks - knock on wood-

But- aren't there sometimes changes in the pupil that are signs of the disease? Lack of response to light, grey spots, etc...?

I was just wonder, Little Miss, if you have tried shining a flashlight and looking at her eyes to see if they look normal and react to light?

Marek's was the first thing I thought too, based on other pictures I've seen, but I would give the St. Johns Wort and Poly-Vi-Sol (without iron) a shot, for sure. It certainly can't hurt at this point.

If she does have to be put down...a necropsy would be very important in identifying the problem.

Not all Marek's victims show eye changes...as a matter of fact, I haven't had one out of the 40+ that I have lost. And, yes, necropsies have identified the problem as Marek's.

It's been 4 days since I started treating her with the wort pills and I don't notice any changes. I leave in another 4 days and if she isn't getting better by then I'll have to kill her. I hope she gets better but it's not looking good so far. :'(

Please, do yourself a favor and if she passes, have a necropsy done. You need to know what you are dealing with in order to protect the rest of your flock.
