I recently got some newly hatched chicks from an elderly gentleman who has been raising chickens mostly for himself on a small scale locally for as long as i can remember. He has mostly black breeds, namely australorps, minorcas, and jersey giants. I had asked about getting chicks and told him i wanted australorps. He assured me he could guarantee the breed as he separated the different breeds of hens and controlled the roosters access to the hens when it came time to keeping hatching eggs. Each year he gives some chickens to local 4-h kids to show at the county fair. Anyway, the chicks are now about 3 weeks old and I am becoming concerned that I may not have gotten australorps as I had wanted. If they are not I doubt I will complain as he is such a nice old gentleman and i am sure would not have done it on purpose. i will probably just re home them and start over as I really want australorps. Can anyone help me identify what I have? Below are two pictures each of two of the chicks. Any ideas?
